1AND1 Shared Hosting Review

by Web Hosting Review Zone on September 11, 2010

1&1 offers a complete range of web services for every need, skill level, and budget. The company’s mission is to provide an optimal Internet presence for private users and small-to-medium sized businesses by offering a complete range of high-quality web hosting solutions at affordable prices.

Price

1&1 offers three hosting plans, priced at $4.99, $6.99, and $9.99. The two more expensive plans include a free domain and unlimited web space, while the cheapest plan includes 50 GB of space. 1&1 offers a 90-day money back guarantee.

Reliability & Uptime

With 1&1, your website is simultaneously hosted in two locations, which helps to eliminate downtime. While we were unable to find any kind of uptime guarantee on their website, we haven’t come across any complaints about the company’s uptime either.

Customer Service

1&1 provides 24/7 customer support via phone and email. They also offer an option called Netviewer, which gives their technical support team access to your computer screen so they can see exactly what you see and guide you through whatever you are trying to do.

Control Panel and Features

1&1 provides customers with their own proprietary control panel. With their control panel you can access server data, set up and maintain email accounts, install software, and everything else you would typically expect from a web hosting control panel.

1&1 Hosting features include:

  • Free Hosting Account Setup
  • 24/7 Toll-Free Support
  • 30-Day Money Back
  • Unlimited Domain Hosting
  • Unlimited Bandwidth

Forum Statistics:

We visited their forum to get some more statistics because people often try to resolve their problem in forums so you may get some useful information before choosing this webhost.

Happy Customers: 10%

Unhappy Coustomers:70%

Neutral :20%

Reason behind Unhappiness:

1.server errors

2.confusing  billing system

3.Confusing  domain management tool

Some Facts:

Negative:

  • 1and1 do not have cpanel hosting so those who are looking for cpanel hosting ,should not choose 1and1 webhosting services.
  • Domain management is quite tough so if you are good at domain terminology don’t go with 1and1.
  • Some SEO experts think that multi year domain registration  is necessary to get high ranking in search engines so if you believe that it is necessary for your website don’t buy domains from 1and1.1and1 doesn’t support multiyear domain registration.
  • Taking back ups and restoring process is quite difficult than other webhosting providers back up and restoring process. One must take back ups of file and database separately.
  • You can’t register their forum unless you are a coustomer so it quite hard to to know insight situation.
  • Server error 500 occurs very often if you are using joomla or wordpress however there is a solution for wordpress users but we could not find a joomla error 500 solution.
  • Limit on number of my sql databases and space in mysql databases .They have 100 limited mysql space.
  • Limited subdomains so for not mal users its very much enough for what actually they are offering but in any case if you are have to use wildcard subdomains then this is not a right place for you .

Positive :

  • With their developer package you will get a license of adobe dream weaver so it’s a cool feature for web developers.
  • You will get free private ssl
  • Free domains with almost every package .With developer package you will get 5 domains free for life.
  • Free simple submission to search engines.

Neutral:

  • 1and1 offers free dedicated ssl in their developer package however it better to go with business package and order dedicated ssl for 49$ per year because

Price of business package is 10$ per month and for developer package it is 20$ so 12X10 =120 extra for Dedicated ssl and some few other facilities is not a very good deal.

Over All:

We can see a lot of negative reviews and even some cases some services are limited but Web Hosting Review Zone likes Hosting providers who does not offer unlimited .

But as we are based on user reviews so we don’t think 1and1 is a standard web hosting provider..How ever we have different views on their dedicated hosting so please check 1and1 dedicated hosting review.

Extra Notes : Some people complained that 1and1 Do not provide the epp code of a domain name but is not true .EPP codes can be found in domain control panel.
